“Emberley invites junior cartoonists to take off on their own from the basics he supplies, and he makes it seem so easy and enjoyable that they're bound to go on to more creative doodling.” – Kirkus Reviews Learn to draw lions, airplanes, dinosaurs, trains, kangaroos, and more in this how-to-draw book by drawing master Ed Emberley! Using simple shapes, Ed Emberley shows would-be artists how to draw over 400 things! This classic book is packed with cool things that kids really want to draw. Easy and fun, the book provides hours of art-full entertainment. Over 2 million Ed Emberley drawing books sold! Review: My Childhood Favorite - I can not recommend this book enough. As a child, I borrowed this book from the library at least a hundred times. As an adult I went back to the library, the same spot where I used to grab it, looked it up, and then bought it here. It's simple and comes with so many fun ideas. This art style was literally the inspiration for a comic I drew as a kid that has turned into a the part book series (work in progress). I think it's a great gift idea for young kids and adults who are young in heart. I think I've already purchased it four or five times as gifts, and on my most recent purchase I recommended it to other adults I worked with for their kids. Additionally I have kept a copy for myself because I have such good memories of this book. I also recommend getting the hardcover. Hardcovers are just better. Review: I think it depends on the child, but this book is great for my youngest - I started my son with Ed Emberley's Truck and Train book when my son was 4. He loved it! And then started asking me for this one because it's advertised on the back. He is now 5 and I knew he would make good use of it. There are a lot more drawings crammed in this one and the pictures are smaller. So if you have a younger child, I'd recommend starting with another book, because the drawings are so tiny and they'll get distracted by all the other things on the page. This book has about 20 drawings per every 2 pages, whereas our Truck and Train book has about 5 drawings per every 2 pages. He does sometimes ask for help in figuring out a more complex item, but for the most part he is able to work out of the book independently. Interestingly, my 8 year old doesn't seem to get the teaching technique that is used in these books. So BEWARE, this book may flop with some kids. And I'll also note that my 8 year old doesn't seem to like any drawing books, even ones that do make sense to him. He likes to draw, but wants to do things his own way, which, of course, is fine by me. I also have some difficulty with Emberley's style and find it confusing and visually distracting, but as I look at it more and more, I have sort of become used to it and can more easily process the style. But my youngest took right to it and it has provided him hours and hours of entertainment. It has also improved the quality and content of his drawings, which now includes lots of details and plenty of creativity.

Unique and fun.
I learned to draw w these Ed Emberly books decades ago, and, have given them as gifts to every new 'drawer' I know will gain from them too. Step by step. Really cool system.

Grandson's Delight!
My 10 year old grandson loved this to help make drawings for sketchnotes, metacogs, and just for fun! I loved it as well, simple and quick drawings are often the best!

Of Course You Should Buy It
It is my belief that everyone should own and use at least one Emberly book. This one, like the others, is great fun.

Good books but small pictures!
I purchased this as a gift for my daughter for Christmas. She's 9 years old and has recently expressed an interest in drawing, and she's much better than I ever was, ha! I've never seen a drawing book quite like this one though, and unfortunately I'm a bit disappointed in it. It's a sturdy book and well made, but the pictures inside are very small. They do show each drawing step mark for mark, which is great for her. And they aren't TOO small, she can see them fine. But most drawing books have one or two drawings per page, this one has at least 6 per page, so the actual pictures are just small. She didn't even realize it was a drawing book at first until I explained it and she looked a bit closer at the pictures. All in all, still a good book and I hope she gets some use out of it. It does have lots of pictures she can learn to draw, which I suppose is the perk of having so many pictures on each page. I just wish I had known before my purchase that it was like this, but none of the pictures on Amazon or the description mention this. When it said it has more than 400 things to draw, I assumed the book would be pretty thick. It’s very thin actually! I would still recommend it to your future artists, just be aware that it’s a bit more difficult to understand so it may be better for the older kids like mine.

wonderful tiny drawings
This is a great book for first time drawers, or doodlers of any age. I use this to conduct art classes in cub scouts. I always enjoyed making very tiny drawings in the borders of my notebooks at school, and later as an adult I find myself still doodling during meetings. This book is for those of us who love to doodle. It shows you how to make the coolest little drawings of everything! There are hundreds of people, buildings, vehicles, boats, and animals to draw. And for learning how to draw, there is no better place to start than Ed Emberly! In addition to this book he has the best series of books for learning to draw called "Ed Emberl's Big Green Drawing Book" and he has orange, red, and purple too. He also has the books on specialized items like trains, or animals, but the big books pretty much cover it all along with this one. A perfect set of books for the young artist. (When these books have been learned, and your artist is thinking of improving their skills they can try Mark Kistler's book next, then move on to books by Jack Hamm if they want to become a real artist someday.) As an adult, I still love this book. I love it more now that it makes my son so happy that he can draw such neat things as castles, with dragons and knights in 2 minutes! A 5 year old or younger can easily draw many of the items in this book, as well as an doodle fan of any age. I give this my highest reccommendation!

The same classic I remember using as a kid
Classic book I remember from my childhood. I keep it in my classroom for my Early finishers and also for inspiration during writing time.

Ganz toll!!!

Fabulous learn-to-draw book
I was given this as a birthday present when I was five years old with the inscription "I wish I'd had this when I was your age". I've now given it to a number of five and six year olds, all of whom have enjoyed it (though sometimes not as much as their parents!) It's packed with a wide range of drawings, from cars and buildings to animals and superheroes, each of which can be created from simple geometric shapes. Ed Emberley also includes lots of variations, encouraging children to experiment once they've got the hang of the basic shape. You probably wouldn't want to draw in this way forever, but it's a great starting point for any budding young artist.
